Gjensidige has set an ambitious goal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from its own operations by 75 percent by 2025, and achieve net zero emissions of greenhouse gases by 2050, in accordance with the Paris Agreement. Now, they are working with Down to Earth to remove the tons they are unable to cut!

"We have already reduced emissions by over 80 percent since 2019. For the greenhouse gas emissions that we are unable to eliminate, we aim to compensate by purchasing carbon credits that fund projects reducing greenhouse gases," says Director of Sustainability at Gjensidige Forsikring, Bente Sverdrup.

Starting from 2023, Gjensidige Forsikring will contribute to the financing of new solutions in carbon storage in forests and soil. They do this to support the development of effective climate solutions in society.

"After careful consideration, we have now entered into agreements for pilot projects with, among others, Down to Earth, to remove greenhouse gases from the atmosphere through the production of biochar, which is also beneficial for soil fertility," says Bente Sverdrup.

Carbon removal is considered a crucial solution to prevent further climate change and its consequences. To achieve long-term climate goals, the world also needs to actively remove greenhouse gases from the atmosphere.

"Through agreements with, among others, Down to Earth, Gjensidige establishes a pilot collaboration with innovative businesses that will be essential in developing future solutions for carbon removal and storage. At the same time, we contribute through this to nature-based solutions that will be important in our efforts to reduce both natural and climate risks," she adds.
